This isolation Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) (Plasma) test measures the level of ACTH in your blood, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that stimulates the adrenal glands to release cortisol. It is used to help diagnose conditions affecting the adrenal or pituitary glands, such as Cushing’s syndrome, Addison’s disease, or secondary adrenal insufficiency.
Although fasting is not required for this test, it is typically done in the morning, as ACTH levels follow a diurnal rhythm and peak early in the day.
