Cystatin C is a protein produced by all nucleated cells at a constant rate and is freely filtered by the kidneys. It serves as a reliable marker of kidney function because its levels in the blood are primarily determined by glomerular filtration rate (GFR), which reflects the kidney’s ability to filter waste from the blood.

For muscular athletes, cystatin C is a preferable marker over blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine for assessing kidney health due to its independence from muscle mass and diet. Unlike BUN and creatinine, it is not significantly influenced by factors like protein intake and muscle breakdown. This lab does not need to be performed fasted.
