The ferritin blood test measures the level of ferritin, a protein that stores iron in your body, to evaluate iron levels and iron storage. It is used to help diagnose and monitor conditions like iron deficiency anemia, iron overload disorders (e.g., hemochromatosis), or chronic diseases affecting iron metabolism. Low ferritin levels indicate depleted iron stores, while high levels may suggest iron overload, inflammation, or liver disease. This test helps assess overall iron status beyond just blood iron levels.
This test does not require fasting.
